Heretic
The Knights Templar who were founded in 1119, and were recognized by Papal bull in 1139. The order escorted pilgrims to the Holy Lands, and took part in Crusades. The order developed financial techniques and business interests, and developed almost a thousand fortifications throughout Christendom. The Knights Templar gradually became a very powerful and influential throughout Christendom. The power and influence became such that others in power felt threatened by it.
King Philip iv of France was deeply in debt to the Knights Templar, owing them vast sums of money. False allegations were made against the Knights Templar to Pope Clement v. The Templars were accused of Idolatry, and worshipping Baphomet and other foul things. King Philip iv of France took the opportunity of these false allegations, to free himself of this huge debt to the Knights Templar. King Philip hoodwinked, persuaded and pressured Pope Clement to act against the Knights Templar due to these allegations, and so this brings us to one of Christendom’s darkest days.
Dawn, Friday 13th October 1307, will be remembered as a day of infamy. King Phillip iv of France organized a coordinated attack on all of the Templar strongholds throughout France, and the simultaneous arrests of all Templar Knights. Leaders such as Jack De Molay, and Geoffroi De Charney were captured and many others. The arrest warrant started with the phrase: "Dieu n'est pas content, nous avons des ennemis de la foi dans le Royaume" ["God is not pleased. We have enemies of the faith in the kingdom]. The Pope finally relenting to Phillips demands, issued a Papal bull in November 1307 instructing other Kings in Europe to arrest Templar Knights and seize their assets.
This is a tale that takes place days after one of Christendom’s darkest days. Some Templar Knights escaped to distant lands, such as William St Clair to Scotland, some were eventually absorbed into the Knights Hospitaller, but for the many, a tortuous death awaited at the hands of the Inquisition.
Geoffroi De Charney, leader of the Knights Templar in Normandy, was one of those Knights captured at Dawn on Friday 13th October. After a rigorous Inquisition at the hands of the Inquisitor general, Geoffroi died a painful death on 16th October 1307.
Geoffroi had a son, Guy De Charney who was 19. Guy had become a young Knight and had not yet joined the Templar order. Guy had been sent to Mont St Michel at the age of 16, to complete his studies. The news of the demise of the Knights Templar circulated like a wild fire a week later at Mont St Michel. A faithful friend and scholarly Monk of Geoffroi, called Julien reached Guy at Mont St Michel after about two weeks. Julien broke the news of Geoffrois death to his son Guy. Julien wanted to escort Guy to a small monastic house near Fougeres, where the Will of Geoffroi De Charney would be read.
Julien and Guy reached the small farm estate outside Fougeres. Julien was seated at the head of the table to read the Will, and Guy and five other men were seated around the table. Julien introduced Guy to the men at the table, ensuring they knew who he was and his noble pedigree. Julien explained to Guy that these men were all good Christian men, loyal to his Father, and all who owed his father a great debt of gratitude. It was now their time to repay that debt, by protecting his one and only heir, Guy De Charney, with their lives!
The men were a mixed bunch, there was a Cleric, Voyagers, a Devil Hunter, a Saintly man, and a Spy. Julien assured Guy that these men all had unique talents, good hearts, and great Loyalty. They were now his men.
The Will
Julien read the will to all those present, which included some fellow monks as witnesses. Geffrois De Charney bequeathed all his estates, servants, and wealth to his one and only heir Guy De Charney. Debts of honour owed to Geoffroi De Charney, would be passed to Guy De Charney, therefore making those here present around the table, Guys Men.
As a Templar Knight, it was seen to be wise to hide the greater part of his wealth for safety and security. Geoffroi De Charney hid his wealth in a secret location in the Languedoc. Julien explained that details of how to find that location would only be passed on to Guy De Charney. Geffroi also left Guy a family ring to be worn at all times, and a medallion also to be worn.
After the reading
Julien explained to Guy where to find the details of the hidden wealth. They were then interrupted by a flustered worried looking monk. The monk explained that a decree had been announced by King Phillip iv, that all family of Templar Knights had been declared Heretic, and were subject to arrest, inquisition and trial, along with those aiding them. All lands, buildings, wealth belonging to such familiies were to be seized, and given to the King.
Julien thinking quickly, suggested finding the wealth, taking it to Scotland, Ireland or Wales, and starting a new life. Julien explained, “ It wont be long before they come looking for you Guy, now go !, take your men, and may God bless you and protect you all”.
